How to Make a Music Website With WordPress: A Step-by-Step Guide
To make a music website with WordPress, set up hosting, choose a theme, create your essential pages and add audio or streaming embeds. Then connect your contact or booking route and test the website on desktop and mobile.
This guide assumes you have chosen self-hosted WordPress. If you are still choosing a platform, start with our website-builder comparison for musicians.
Plan your WordPress music website
Start with Home, Music, About and Contact. Add Shows if you have dates to publish, and a press page if you have approved photos, a biography and other material for promoters or media. A store is optional; plan it only when you have something to sell and a delivery process.
Decide the main visitor action before building: listening, viewing show information or making an enquiry. Put that route within easy reach of the homepage.
Choose a theme that fits your content
Test a theme with your actual artwork, track titles and navigation labels. Check whether the text remains readable and the player controls remain usable on a phone. A music-themed demo is less useful than a layout you can maintain with your own content.
Elementor is a page-builder plugin, not a WordPress theme. If you use it, check its compatibility with your theme and avoid adding another builder without a clear reason.
Add only the plugins you need
Audio playback
Start with the native WordPress Audio block when you need a straightforward player. Consider an additional player only when you have requirements the native block does not meet, such as a particular playlist presentation. Check compatibility and maintenance before installing it.
Forms and sales
Choose a form tool for contact or booking enquiries and test delivery. Add an ecommerce or download system only if sales are part of the website. Our music download website guide covers free files and paid delivery separately.
Add audio and streaming embeds
In the WordPress block editor, add an Audio block and select your audio file from an upload, the Media Library or a supported file URL. Preview the player and test playback. The official Audio block documentation explains the current controls.
For a supported streaming service such as Spotify, use the relevant embed block with the release or track URL. Label the content clearly. An audio player or embed lets visitors listen; it does not automatically provide a downloadable file or paid delivery.
Write useful music, show and contact pages
Give releases a title, artwork, relevant description and clear listening or purchase action. Show pages should state the date, venue and ticket destination accurately. Your contact page should explain the enquiries you accept and what information you need to respond.
Use specific page titles and headings. Describe informative images in alt text based on what they actually show; avoid repeating the same music keywords across every image.
Set up WordPress and publish your pages
Connect hosting, domain and HTTPS
Install WordPress using your host’s documented process, connect your domain and verify HTTPS. Choose a sensible permalink structure before publishing a new site. On an existing site, preserve working URLs and plan redirects before any necessary changes.
Build pages and navigation
Create your planned pages and add the essential destinations to navigation. Use labels listeners recognize, such as Music, Shows and Contact. Check the menu, player and enquiry route while logged out.
Promote the published website
Link your artist profiles to the website and share the page most relevant to each announcement. A release announcement should point to the release; a show announcement should point to its information. Keep dates and contact details current.
Add sales when you are ready
Downloads, merchandise and memberships need different delivery and support arrangements. Decide which offer you can maintain before adding a store. Read our music website monetization guide to plan the offer before configuring payments.
WordPress music website launch checklist
- Test audio without autoplay on desktop and mobile.
- Check navigation, show links and ticket destinations.
- Submit a test enquiry and confirm it reaches the intended inbox.
- Check that published pages are accessible while logged out.
- Review indexing settings and remove an unintended search-engine visibility block before launch.
- Confirm backups and an ongoing update process.
- If selling, test checkout, receipts and delivery.
WordPress music website FAQs
Do I need a plugin to play a track?
Not always. The native Audio block supports a straightforward audio player. Use an additional plugin when you have a specific need beyond that player.
Can I use an embed instead of uploading music?
A supported embed is an option for playback. Check the provider’s embed behavior and test the result on your pages. It does not replace a download or checkout system.
Should I add a store at launch?
Only if you have a real offer and a tested purchase and delivery process. You can launch a listening and enquiry website first.
Launch a foundation you can maintain: clear pages, working audio and a reliable enquiry route. Explore our Music Website Design service if you want help shaping that experience.
